Well, that depends on the type of story you are writing. The length of your tale will dictate the amount of character information you’ll have to create them come to life. For simplicity’s sake, I’ve broken my personality sheet into what I use for each type of writing. Your character sheets may vary.
Fiction with its very definition is unreal. When we see a novel we are aware that the narrative and the characters in it are only a product of creativity of the author. When we view a film we are aware that the characters are only acting their parts essentially pretending to be somebody other than themselves. Still we’re mentally affected by the twists and turns in the story. We laugh, weep with them, and also sense indignant towards the bad guys. The adorable hero or heroine might be despicable in real life and the villain might be a perfect gentleman, but we identify them with all the characters they’re portraying. In essence for that brief period we ourselves get hauled into the imaginary world of the writer. Strangely enough this happens also with the author at least to a number of them. He or she travels through the very same emotions while writing and possibly later as well. Ideally it is very clear that link is something that can have quite an impact on you and others, too. At times there is simply way too much to even attempt to cover in one go, and that is important for you to recognize and take home. But I wanted to pause for a moment so you can reflect on the importance of what you have just read. In light of all that is available, and there is a lot, then this is a great time to be reading this. Our final few items can really prove to be powerful considering the overall.
“Knowledge is limited, imagination isn’t.” Albert Einstein explained that even though the wording of the next part might have been different. Einstein like any other human being wasn’t infallible. Knowledge might be limited in the case of an individual but in general it is infinite even if we believe just logical understanding leaving apart transcendental. A mind can imagine only what relates in some way to things already stored inside. Getting back to fiction that the creativity of the writer also has to be predicated on his direct or indirect experiences. In this sense fiction relies on fact and to that extent it represents another dimension of truth. Here of course we run into the philosophical difficulty of the precise meaning of reality. There are two diametrically opposite views – materialistic and spiritualistic. According to the former only things that can be perceived through our senses are real, everything else is unreal. The latter asserts that there’s one ultimate fact from which we perceive comes out and what that’s perceived is only an illusion. We again look at a statement by Einstein: “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one.” He was obviously referring to the reality of the phenomenal world. The term illusion can have different connotations but generally it means perceiving something rather different from what it is. So the existence of the thing is a prerequisite for illusion, it is not a mental construction. Imagination is a mental phenomenon and has nothing to do with anything really existent. Therefore the relationship between fiction and reality is completely different from that between reality and illusion. It does take some time to write a complete story for any kind of book.
In a philosophical sense that the phenomenal world itself may be regarded as fiction. This is what Shakespeare perhaps meant when he wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all women and men merely players”. We may also think of everything in the world (space, time, matter) as gamers because everything has its own entry and exit. We of course run into the issue of saying what the point is and who wrote the script. Shakespeare most likely believed in God, strict determinism, and at the truth of the world, so he didn’t have this issue. Now it is generally believed that the universe also includes a beginning and will have an end. If the universe is also a participant, are there multiple universes or does this come alone on the stage and then introduces other players? However, what is the stage in this case? Quantum physics points to one possibility. At extremely small scales of time and space there is a quantum void that is not really empty but filled with energy which is constantly changing itself into virtual particles and back. What remains after the conclusion of the universe may be an infinite version of the quantum emptiness full of energy into which each of the thing has converted itself. This universal energy is the source of and background for all.
It isn’t only a philosophical point either. We invest a considerable part of our life in the fictional world. We muse about the items in future and live over the prior imagining what might have been. The imagination about the future is based on our hopes and ambitions and also to some extent it is a positive in the sense that we are in a position to mould our future when we sincerely try. But musing over the past is really a futile exercise since we know for a fact that ‘what could have been’ is only fantasy that never happened. Nevertheless it serves the exact same function as fiction in the point of view of amusement. We entertain ourselves by imagining how life could have been, knowing fully well that it has no fact whatsoever. In a metaphorical sense ago, at least the distant past, is fiction. At a particular sense history itself is fiction as it invariably includes the abstract bias of the author. What we understand of Buddha and Jesus today is much more fiction than facts.
